Modelling Dispatchable Loads in Interlinked Power, Heat and Transport Models

The objective of this project is to develop methodologies for building models of renewable energy based integrated energy systems within the sector coupled networks for countries of the North Sea Region. The open source open data based energy modelling framework- oemof will be utilized for coupling of power, heat and transport sectors. After that major dispatchable loads (e.g. electric cars, power to heat, power to gas) will be systematically included in the model.
In the first phase, the research will commence with defining the target scenarios (i.e. achieving 100% renewable-based energy system within 2050) and specifying the system boundaries. After that, the oemof-based sector-coupled model will be gradually developed for the German energy system. In this part, two things will be analyzed. Firstly, modelling and systematic inclusion of dispatchable loads to investigate flexibility options. Secondly, assessing the potential of replacing fossil fuels by 100% renewables at a minimum cost. In the second phase, the model will be further extended to gradually include Norway and then other NS countries. A techno-economic analysis will be performed to assess the role of Norwegian hydro storage, biomass and bio-fuel options from other NS countries in an extended model.
Project objective: expected results and contribution to society
The final outcomes of this project will elaborate on a suitable approach for a smooth and efficient transition towards the 100% renewable-based future energy system in NS Countries by 2050. The approach will provide guidance and necessary recommendations, which will incorporate the techno-economic analysis of the energy system components, assessment of potential renewable energy resources, and prospects of storages, cross-border collaboration and dispatchable loads required by the targeted transition.
